Look Of The Week: One Dreamer

One Dreamer

Let’s see if this one sticks, eh? I’ve been way too busy to write anything in this thing, but I keep seeing cool looking games I want to gibber about. So this is a of compromise of sorts – once a week I’ll pick an upcoming game which looks interesting and do a little mini-post about it. First up: One Dreamer from a group of my fellow countrymen going by the same name.

It’s a hard one to describe so here’s One Dreamer’s own elevator pitch: An aspiring independent game developer named Frank searches for inspiration by entering the twisted world of his own consciousness through lucid dreaming. However the deeper he goes, the more disconnected he becomes from reality and the more he contemplates his own existence. They’re citing The Last Of Us as a major influence, though the presentation is more reminiscent of 2D pixel-art stuff like Gods Will Be Watching.

One Dreamer

I like the whole ‘examining the mind of a game dev’ aspect – videogames rarely touch on their own creative process the way other media do (see: films like Adaptation, books like If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways, and every dickheaded song ever written about life on the road). The whole thing is vaguely reminiscent of ancient 16-bit era bizarro ’em up Weird Dreams, though hopefully this will turn out to be much better.

It’s been in development for two years already, and they’ve put up a Kickstarter to raise the funds needed to finish it off. They’re just past halfway with less than a week to go and I reckon they might just make it. I hope they do. If you’re still in two minds about whether to enter this one there’s a demo available for your consideration.
