Bestie

Through no fault of your own,

I have found it harder to say “I love you” recently.

But my dear, tender friend.

I hope you felt it:

When I avoided potholes so you could sleep in my passenger seat.

When I hugged you deeply three times to crack your spine in the way that you like.

When I made you a frozen pizza after work and put on a DVD you loved.

When we sat in silence, side by side, in the sand.

I witness your sweetness this past week, and I’m proud like a parent:

Celebrating a stranger’s birthday on the dancefloor.

Doing a gas station photoshoot at 1 AM.

Offering small distractions for big worried minds.

Giving a canvas for new lovers to paint.

It is easy to see you!

And so hard to see you hurt…

Please call me when you get home,

I love you.
